Refrigerator / Freezers on Ground Fault Outlets:
Do you have a freezer or refrigerator in your garage? Check to see if the outlet you are using is ground fault protected (GFI).
Ground Fault Protection is required for garage outlets. If the outlet is intended for a specific appliance, like a refrigerator or freezer, the device that provides this protection can be a GFI breaker or just a GFI outlet. This type of breaker affects outlets that are configured past the GFI, and are required by the National Electric Code to be used outdoors and in bathrooms, kitchens, and garages because they respond, in milliseconds, to protect people from electrical shock in locations that have proximity to water. Many times, one GFI extends from the garage to the bathrooms and outside outlets. However, a GFI can trip (break) during power fluctuations and/or thunder storms, leaving you with spoiled food if you donít happen to notice that the breaker has been tripped.
If you have trouble identifying the location and type of your GFI device, call Dynamo Electric. We may be able to help you over the phone. If you find a refrigerator or freezer outlet is GFI protected, one of Dynamo Electricís qualified electricians can come to your home and reconfigure the GFI protection to save your food from spoilage and still remain within the allowed National Electric Code.
